July Wrap-Up: FOD Force Powers Through Final AS9100 Milestones

July has been a month of focus, momentum, and full-force commitment at Datalink Electronics – with our entire team aligned around one key objective: the final push in our journey toward AS9100 certification.

As we approach the final stages of this important quality milestone, our internal campaign – The FOD Force – has played a vital role in transforming the way we engage with process, standards, and culture.

🔹 Captain FOD (aka Operations Manager Pete Kimber) continued his mission to champion risk management across the shop floor, encouraging teams to “Anticipate. Eliminate. Safeguard.”
🔹 The Strain (aka Production Manager Iain Straing) was relentless in her pursuit of perfect conformity, keeping specification and discipline front of mind.
🔹 SpecCheck (aka Quality Engineer John Blakemore) upheld precision as a daily discipline, monitoring and reinforcing control at every stage.

These characters – and the people behind them – helped shape a culture where quality isn’t just an outcome, but a mindset.

Through posters, floor walks, checklists, and light-hearted reminders, the campaign has helped to:

  • Boost awareness of contamination control and foreign object risk
  • Reinforce traceability and documentation processes
  • Promote collaboration across production, engineering, and quality teams
  • Align individual responsibility with company-wide standards

Our July focus has been all about closing the loop – tightening systems, supporting audit readiness, and sustaining momentum through structured reinforcement and shared ownership.

And there’s been even more to celebrate. This month also saw the launch of our involvement in the 2025 TBAT Innovation Challenge, where we’re proud to sponsor Workshop 4. This important programme supports bold, UK-based innovation across med-tech, electronics, and engineering – perfectly aligned with our values of technical excellence and forward-thinking culture.

“It’s great to be part of something that helps other companies realise their potential – just as we’ve been doing internally with the FOD Force,” says Business Development Director Aran Sharma.

As we enter August, we’re proud of the culture we’ve built, the partnerships we’re developing, and the people driving both forward. News will follow soon…

Behind the Cape – Driving Engagement, Compliance, and Operational Excellence

Look past the capes and comic visuals, and you’ll find something more profound: a structured behavioural engagement programme that’s reshaping the way we approach quality at Datalink Electronics.

The FOD Force campaign may look playful on the surface, but it’s firmly grounded in operational intent. Since its launch, it has acted as a platform to boost participation in inspection routines, reinforce critical control points, and ensure frontline teams are aligned with AS9100 expectations.

Behind every poster, there’s a purpose:

  • Training sessions are now opened with themed moments to set focus and tone.
  • Audit prep checklists reference the heroes’ attributes as reminders of process discipline.
  • Visual inspection logs now include voluntary “FOD Spot Checks” – a practice that’s become self-driven and peer-supported.
  • Internal communications highlight FOD Force “wins”, celebrating teams who detect issues early or resolve risks collaboratively.

The FOD Force narrative doesn’t shy away from challenges. In fact, it uses The Clutterbuck – our campaign’s fictional saboteur – to dramatise how seemingly minor lapses can spiral into major quality concerns. His presence adds tension and engagement, creating opportunities for discussion, training, and reflection on how each team member plays a role in resisting chaos and upholding standards.

The result? A noticeable shift in accountability, energy, and pride around quality-related tasks – particularly in high-pressure build environments.

Crucially, the campaign is not a one-off. It’s embedded into our communications calendar, layered into toolbox talks, and supported by leadership at every level. By humanising the high stakes of foreign object damage, we’ve made quality relatable – and easier to own.

At Datalink, we’re proving that even the most complex standards can be adopted more effectively when paired with imaginative internal engagement. The FOD Force doesn’t just help us tick boxes – it helps us build better habits.

Because in our world, operational excellence doesn’t wear a cape – but sometimes, it helps if the message does.

Meet the FOD Force – A Cultural Initiative with Serious Impact

AS9100 isn’t just a badge of compliance – it’s a mindset. It’s about embedding a quality-first culture that’s active, aware, and accountable. At Datalink Electronics, we understand that fostering this culture requires more than process documentation or audit readiness. It requires people – engaged, aligned, and empowered.

Enter The FOD Force – a creative campaign designed to bring the core pillars of AS9100 to life through the power of character and story.

Each fictional hero in the FOD Force represents a fundamental element of our quality system:

  • Captain FOD: The proactive sentinel of Risk Management, identifying threats before they escalate. His mantra? “Anticipate. Eliminate. Safeguard.”
  • The Strain: Focused entirely on Conformity, she detects deviations and ensures strict adherence to specification and process.
  • SpecCheck: The ultimate champion of Process Control, monitoring every stage of production with unwavering precision.

And where there are heroes, there’s always a challenger. Enter The Clutterbuck – a chaotic counterforce to our quality-first culture. As a fictional antagonist in the campaign, he embodies everything that threatens production: disorder, distraction, and the illusion that standards don’t matter. His character is a reminder that non-conformance often begins with small oversights – and that it takes real vigilance to keep clutter and confusion at bay.

These characters aren’t just mascots – they’re meaningful representations of real behaviours we expect and value across our teams. Through posters, training events, inspection drives and digital messaging, they act as prompts to reinforce best practices in contamination control, traceability, and disciplined execution.

Most importantly, the campaign reminds us that every person on the floor is a hero in their own right – with the power to protect products, prevent issues, and promote excellence.

As we continue our journey to AS9100 certification, The FOD Force campaign has provided a unifying theme that connects individual responsibility with company-wide standards.

At Datalink, culture and compliance go hand in hand – and initiatives like The FOD Force prove that even the most technical requirements can be championed with creativity, clarity, and purpose.

The Threat of FOD – and How Datalink is Fighting It

Foreign Object Damage (FOD) might not always be visible on the production floor – but its effects are anything but invisible. In high-reliability industries like aerospace and defence, even the smallest particle of debris can cause catastrophic consequences. FOD can lead to delays, non-conformances, costly rework, and, in the worst cases, in-field failures. These are risks no OEM, supplier, or operator can afford to ignore.

At Datalink Electronics, we treat FOD as a mission-critical challenge. As part of our journey towards AS9100 certification, we’ve built a systematic approach to detecting, preventing, and eliminating foreign object hazards – from initial design right through to final inspection. That includes robust controls across cleanroom processes, tool management, floor discipline, and component handling.

But process alone isn’t enough. That’s why we’ve launched a new internal campaign to address FOD at both the operational and cultural level – introducing: The FOD Force.

This engaging initiative blends visual storytelling with serious intent. By framing quality risks through the lens of fictional heroes, we’re encouraging team-wide vigilance, reinforcing accountability, and embedding a culture of ownership across every stage of production. The campaign aligns perfectly with our compliance goals and supports the behaviours required by AS9100 standards – particularly in the areas of contamination control, visual management, and clean-as-you-go principles.

Foreign Object Damage is relentless – and it doesn’t play fair. Disguised hazards, missed contaminants, or lapses in discipline can appear without warning. That’s why our FOD Force initiative embraces not just proactive prevention, but also resilience in the face of setbacks. Every superhero story needs a villain – and in ours, chaos itself is personified by The Clutterbuck, the self-proclaimed Duke of Debris. His antics remind us that FOD risks are real, unpredictable, and worth fighting every day.

In short, we’re making FOD prevention part of our culture – not just our checklist. With the FOD Force leading the charge, Datalink continues to elevate quality, protect our customers’ products, and uphold the highest standards of aerospace manufacturing excellence.
